Shabbath 2 of 7: Camping by the Red Sea
Baruhhah
Text: Exodus 14:1-12 (DDSV)
1 Yahuwah spoke to Moshah (Moses), saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Yisrael (Israel), that they turn back and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal Tsephon (Zephon). You will encamp opposite it by the sea. 3 Pharaoh will say of the children of Yisrael (Israel), ‘They are entangled in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.’ 4 I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will follow after them; and I will get honor over Pharaoh, and over all his army; andthe Mitsri (Egyptians) (Egyptians) will know that I am Yahuwah.” They did so.
5 The king of Mitsraim (Egypt) was told that the people had fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Yisrael (Israel) go from serving us?” 6 He prepared his chariot, and took his army with him; 7 and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots ofMitsraim (Egypt), with captains over all of them. 8 Yahuwah hardened the heart of Pharaoh king ofMitsraim (Egypt), and he pursued the children of Yisrael (Israel); for the children of Yisrael (Israel) went out with a high hand. 9 The Mitsri (Egyptians) pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal Tsephon (Zephon).
10 When Pharaoh came near, the children of Yisrael (Israel) lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Mitsri (Egyptians) (Egyptians) were marching after them; and they were very afraid. The children of Yisrael (Israel) cried out to Yahuwah. 11 They said to Moshah (Moses), “Was it because there were no graves in Mitsraim (Egypt) that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us out of Mitsraim (Egypt)? 12 Isn’t this the word that we spoke to you in Mitsraim (Egypt), saying, ‘Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?’ For it would have been better for us to serve the Mitsri (Egyptians) than to die in the wilderness.”
Exodus 14:1-12 details Yahuwah’s plan to harden Pharaoh’s heart and draw him to the sea so He could gain honor over him. Pharaoh regretted letting the people of Yisrael go and pursued them with his entire army, including 600 chosen chariots. When the Egyptians approached, the children of Yisrael were terrified, cried out to Yahuwah, and bitterly complained to Moshah (Moses) that it would have been better to remain slaves in Mitsraim (Egypt) than to die in the wilderness.
