The 2nd Calends: The Red Sea Crossing
Text: Exodus 14:13-31 (Divine Design Scripture Version)
13 Moshah said to the people, “You won’t be afraid. You will stand still, and you will see the salvation of Yahuwah which he will work for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again. 14 Yahuwah will fight for you, and you will be still.” 15 Yahuwah said to Moshah, “Why do you cry to me? You will speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward. 16 You will lift up your rod, and you will stretch out your hand over the sea, and you will divide it: and the children of Israel will go into the middle of the sea on dry ground. 17 Behold, I myself will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will go in after them. I will get honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, over his chariots, and over his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am Yahuwah when I have gotten honor over Pharaoh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.” 19 The messenger of the Divine Designer, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them. 20 It came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. There was the cloud and the darkness, yet it gave light by night. And the one didn’t come near the other all night. 21 Moshah stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahuwah caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all the night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 The children of Israel went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left hand. 23 The Egyptians pursued, and went in after them into the middle of the sea: all of Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 In the morning watch, Yahuwah looked out on the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and confused the army of the Egyptians. 25 He took off their chariot wheels, so that it drove heavily; so that the Egyptians said, “Let’s flee from the face of Israel, for Yahuwah fights for them against the Egyptians!” 26 Yahuwah said to Moshah, “You will stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.” 27 Moshah stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled into it. Yahuwah completely overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea. 28 The waters returned, and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even all Pharaoh’s army that went into the sea after them. There remained not so much as one of them. 29 But the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left hand. 30 Thus Yahuwah saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel saw the great work which Yahuwah worked against the Egyptians, and the people feared Yahuwah; and they believed in Yahuwah and in his servant Moshah.
Summary
The passage recounts the Red Sea crossing. As the Israelites were pursued by the Egyptian army, Moshah instructed them to stand still, promising that Yahuwah would work their salvation. Yahuwah commanded Moshah to stretch his rod over the sea, which a strong east wind then divided, creating dry land for the children of Israel to walk through. A pillar of cloud moved to stand between the two camps, causing darkness for the Egyptians and light for the Israelites. Although the Egyptians pursued them into the sea, Yahuwah confused their army and disabled their chariots. At Yahuwah's command, Moshah stretched out his hand again, and the waters returned, completely overthrowing and covering Pharaoh’s entire army, leaving none alive. The Israelites walked safely on dry land, and witnessing this great work, they feared Yahuwah and believed in Yahuwah and in his servant Moshah.
